These incidents are very often incorrectly reported as suicides. Domestic workers are very often locked in their houses, even their rooms, by employers. They try to escape by climbing down from windows, sometimes making ropes out of bedsheets. Sometimes they suceed, and other times they end up in the hospital. Suicide is a crime in Kuwait, so the employer brings this charge so that the maid will be deported, and they won’t have to face consequences for any abuse. It’s also a more publicly acceptable explanation than the alternative: that many maids will take huge risks to escape abusive employment situations.
