The Philippine channel GMA TV reported last week about the return of over 100 Filipino workers from Lebanon. The Philippines officially has a ban on sending workers to Lebanon, and those repatriated entered the country illegally.
Two such worker described the abuse they and fellow domestic workers endure in Lebanon. One of them said that she was unaware of the abuse domestic workers suffer in Lebanon, because the country has a reputation of being a good work destination. She described how her first employer barely let her sleep and the second didn’t pay her salaries. She said that other workers are raped by their employers, kept locked up, not given food and made to work for long hours. Another worker interviewed said that her employer once beat her up when she returned late from her day off.
These kinds of tales are very disturbing, and yet too common. We think that in the absence of any protection of domestic workers in Lebanon, the expected move by the Philippine government to lift the ban on sending workers to Lebanon should be reconsidered.

I would not recommend you to pursue your application to Lebanon. I have a very good Lebanese friend but he himself admitted that generally Lebanese do classify Filipinos as MAIDS. His househelp is a Filipino but I find it really disturbing that the girl has to work both in his house during the night and in his in-laws during the day where his kids stay while his wife is at work. He is such a nice man compared to other Lebanese but I do not agree for letting his maid work in both areas.

We had a phillipino citizen from Mati city, called elisabeth bacor. we used to treat her like our little sister even that she was moody and several times impolite. Personnally i work a lot, but evening time i used to wash alone my dishes thinking maybe she is tired. the big problems began one month after she arrived, till she got her 2 free sundays. then, again problems ,because she wanted a mobile phone. then second, and then , yes , the third… telling me that 2 were used with a line that only gave message for her country. of course i didn/t believe. She was the master in our house. till when I asked from her to give me her cell, being too mean, and I discovered that she still has 2 more. there were messages in her language but alsoo in english. about her next appoint. with different men for 12 dollars per person. when i knew, i was shocked. we told her she will travel back to her country. but still she had the time to take, maybe by misteake, a ring, a bracelet and my wathc, all in gold. I still have her telephone lines for who wants to verify the truth. but we were shoked. it wasn,t a pleasure to meet u in this life elisabeth bacor from mati city, it was a shame…

I am a Lebanese living In UAE for 5 years now. I have met through my work a lot of Filipino and for the most part they are peaceful people who want to work and earn money to have a better life. On the other hand i have seen the ladies who come to work as secretary or housemaid for 400 or 500$ and then start prostituting on weekends and any available time they have. They go to single’s bar to meet foreigners and once it is time to go home they ask for money. I found out most of these girls to be liars, they always claim to be raped by their employer and physically abused so they can keep the good girl image in case they want to get married or for the sake of their conservative families. Although some of the cases are genuine and workers suffer from bad employers but for most cases are fabricated just to cover their own wrongdoing.
