Next Sunday (February 28th), a protest will be held in front of the General Security Retention Center in Adlieh, Beirut to demand the closing down of the center. Among others, the retention center holds refugees and migrant workers in an illegal manner in inhumane conditions.
Below is the press release by the Lebanese Center for Human Rights
CALL FOR A GENERAL MOBILIZATION
To Close Down the General Security Retention Center
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28 at 12PM
Under the Adlieh bridge, hundreds of persons are detained underground in inhumane conditions with no natural light or ventilation.
The General Security maintains these persons illegally, including refugees, migrant domestics and workers who have already served their sentence, for indeterminate periods of time without any external control.
This practice constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights and must end immediately!
The Lebanese Center for Human Rights calls on human rights defenders and all citizens to express their indignation this Sunday February 28 at 12PM in front of the General Security Retention Center at the Adlieh round-about to demand:
· The immediate release of all persons arbitrarily detained.
· The closing down of the retention center.
· The review of the General Security’s prerogatives
Break the silence on illegal practices of the General Security!

I have a position in the model united nations in politics. The conference is just a few days from now, so i have decided to read upon migrant labor rights in the Arab world. Let me just say that this site is very informative, thank you.
The fact stands that there are no migrant labor rights in the Arab world. There is an extreme violation of human rights in many countries. How can the world even mention the word ‘peace’ and ‘humanity’ when its leaders are the foundation of inequitable decisions and actions as well as the great suffering endured by many innocent people. Women and men leave their homes to work in foreign countries to be able to feed their families, to be assured the safety they were once denied, and to live a better life. Many employers of foreign maids and workers are either completely ruthless or have absolutely no clue as to how to treat them decently. They are workers, NOT SLAVES! Many foreign maids are abused by their employers but can not do anything about it. If they press charges, they are locked up in jail until the trial, which usually takes a long time (even longer than what their sentence would be if they were charged by their employers).
This act of inhumanity proves how low governments can go; being perfect representatives of torture and racism. These are malicious governments that should be targeted to be altered or shut down.
Again, thank you for this information.
