Last week, the Shankaboot team who produces a Lebanese web drama of the name Shankaboot, produced a short satirical teaser depicting a Lebanese woman talking about her maid, and advising Lebanese women on the subject of domestic workers. Madam Najem was the star of a recent Shankaboot episode entitled “Doulika in Distress” where she is seen abusing her domestic worker from Sri Lanka.
Some of the comments on the satirical teaser, that were posted on Facebook and elsewhere, note how realistic it is! We let you be the judge, and we share with you the following two links on Lebanese court sentences won by an Ethiopian, and by a Filipino.

It would not be entirely true to claim not knowing the ferocity of domestic violence directed towards maids in the Arab World, but watching this clip crossed all lines of expectations.
The ugliness of racism as demonstrated by Mme Najem and her disregard to the lives of others is beyond imagination, not to mention the feeling of nausea one feels listening to her.
It may be ironic that one feels the dignity of the lady from Sri Lanka, even if she didn’t utter a word, compared to the lack of it with the slave driver, no matter how many times she polishes her nails a week or dyes her her in a season. If there’s a funny part to the clip is Mme Najem’s incomprehension of the sarcastic question about her favourite Autumn colour..!!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the madam spends a week in Doulika’s shoes? either in Sri Lanka or as a maid?
Thank you for opening our eyes to the reality of yet another injustice.
