Dubai Police Arrest Migrant For Uploading Video of Abuse

On July 18, 2013

Video of an Emirati man attacking an Indian driver following a minor traffic accident went viral early this week. The original video was removed but has been re-uploaded here.

Arab Times reported that the Emirati was arrested. However, Dubai police also arrested the Indian migrant who uploaded the video following a complaint from the man’s son. Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina affirmed that while the Emirati committed a punishable crime, “no person has the right to film others or defame them without their knowledge.”

According to Gulf Today, the Indian migrant remains detained for interrogation. Low-income migrants are treated differentially by the judicial system in part because they often lack access to critical resources, including lawyers, translating services, and the funding necessary for court procedures.
