20,000 Ethiopian domestic workers to arrive in Saudi by March

On February 21, 2019

Minimum salaries for domestic workers will be SAR 1,000 (USD 266.66), a compromise between the SAR 1,200 requested by Ethiopia and the SAR 850 initially offered by Saudi.

A bilateral labour agreement was signed between the two countries in May 2017, and Ethiopia lifted its five-year ban on sending workers to the region in 2018.  Thousands of Ethiopian domestic workers nonetheless continued to work in Saudi and across the region during the ban. Labour agreements have so far been signed with Jordan, Qatar, and the UAE.
