Qatar launches whistleblower platform

On June 17, 2021

Qatar has launched a unified platform to file complaints, that includes anonymous (whistleblower) complaints as well. The platform includes employees of the private sector and those who fall under the domestic worker law as well.

Filing regular complaints will require registration with either the Qatar ID or visa number. Whistleblowers require no registration but must submit a valid phone number to receive a confirmation SMS.

The platform can be used to file a complaint against the employer, follow-up on a complaint, review personal data registered with the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, and also to report a violation one may witness.

The ability to file a complaint without revealing personal information will go a long way in reporting more violations as a lot of workers fear retribution if they file a formal complaint. The whistleblower section also helps third parties who are witnesses to violations to raise them with authorities.

Workers can file anonymous complaints by providing at least one of the four fields in the platform: Establishment name, establishment registration number, workplace address or location on the map. The complainant does have an option to reveal personal information. The drop-down menu gives (see image) several categories of complaints, but none concerning wage abuse. However, it can be added in the ‘others’ section. Concern does remain on the confidentiality around the phone number used to file the whistleblower.
