Kuwait and Philippines sign domestic labour agreement; Philippines lifts ban

On May 17, 2018

Kuwait and the Philippines have signed a MoU on the employment of domestic workers.  Provisions of the agreement include commitments to 24/7 hotline and creation of a special police unit to respond to complaints, guaranteed access to phones, and a prohibition against confiscation of passports.

The Philippines' ban on workers to Kuwait was lifted shortly after the agreement was signed.

Tensions between the two countries appear to be relaxing rapidly.  Kuwaiti authorities have released the embassy workers accused of helping workers' escape their employers, and President Duarte is set to visit the country soon.

An estimated 150,000 of the 250,000 Filipinos working in Kuwait are domestic workers.
