Bahraini man who murdered a maid receives a life sentence

On October 26, 2009

A Bahraini court handed a life sentence to a man who murdered his maid, Gulf News reported today. As we've previously wrote, the man was spotted dumping the body of Ami Tursiya Takiyat (29), an Indonesian maid who worked for him.

We welcome this severe sentence that shows that the lives of migrant workers aren't less sacred than those of locals. In several cases, people sentenced to life by Bahraini courts were at some point pardoned. This must not happen here. The Bahraini legal system must send a message of zero tolerance for such criminal behavior. We urge the Bahraini courts to continue making similar rulings in cases of abused and mistreated foreign workers. Abusive employers must know that they will face consequences for their actions.
